Our fire testing provides reliable evidence that helps demonstrate compliance with standards and building codes. It helps you meet project requirements and the expectations of regulators, specifiers and your clients. Our team has the expertise and experience to test products and systems for clients around the world. We provide specialist fire testing facilities, ensure client confidentiality and deliver independent reporting to support product development, specification and building consent pathways.

Why test with fire?

Bring products to market with confidence

Test early, refine faster and understand performance trade-offs before you commit.

Make compliance simpler

Get results to determine fire resistance ratings and fire resistance levels required by the Building Codes of New Zealand and Australia. These ratings and levels are also recognised by many other jurisdictions around the world.

Win trust with robust evidence

Give specifiers, contractors and building owners confidence in what they’re selecting and installing.

Types of fire testing on offer

Impacts of fire on multi-storey buildings
Assessment of how fire affects multi-storey structures, evaluating overall building performance and safety during fire events.

Fire spread
Testing and analysis of fire propagation within buildings and along exterior façades, including vertical spread scenarios.

Smoke density and gas measurement
Measurement of smoke density and key gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide to assess visibility and toxicity during fires.

Fire resistance and reaction-to-fire testing
Evaluation of materials and assemblies for their resistance to fire and their behavior when exposed to flames, including engineering-based fire assessments where appropriate.

Testing your products and systems

We provide independent fire testing across a wide range of building products and systems, including:

  • reaction to fire and fire resistance performance
  • fire performance of walls, floors, roofs and structural elements
  • fire behaviour of materials, linings and assemblies
  • testing to support product development, verification and approval.

Standards we meet for assurance and trust

International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ) accreditation provides independent, third‑party recognition of the technical and scientific competence of professional organisations. We are IANZ-accredited for the following test methods:

Why trust BRANZ?

BRANZ operates one of the largest and most advanced fire testing laboratories in the Southern Hemisphere, purpose built for full-scale, real-world testing. This allows manufacturers to understand how products behave in real fire scenarios - not just in small laboratory samples.

Products and systems can be assembled and tested in secure, private client bays, maintaining client confidentiality and protecting intellectual property.

BRANZ’s fire testing and research teams are globally recognised experts in fire behaviour, combining decades of fire science, engineering judgement and independent assessment.
