Supporting your goals
We support a range of people, professions and organisations in New Zealand and internationally.
Manufacturers and suppliers
Validate products and systems through internationally recognised tests, confirming performance and compliance.
Designers and engineers
Access reliable, independent evidence for compliance pathways, supporting innovative approaches and meeting regulatory requirements.
Regulators
Contract our lab for impartial testing, ensuring industry standards are upheld, and public safety is prioritised.
Researchers
Utilise our specialist equipment and facilities to advance fire safety knowledge and develop new solutions for the built environment.
What makes our fire lab worldclass
Our lab’s unique facilities and equipment – including multi-storey testing spaces, advanced calorimetry, climate-controlled environments, and real-time data acquisition – make us the ideal partner for those needing robust, repeatable, and credible fire safety assessments. Fire lab features include:
- 2,310 m² footprint and 22.5 m high roof allows multiple tests and multi-storey systems
- 10 MW open burn hood and calorimetry to analyse heat release and CO/CO₂ production
- two full-scale cube furnaces and one pilot furnace (flat and vertical materials; faster throughput)
- climate-controlled room for close-to-realistic, repeatable conditions
- state-of-the-art data acquisition for real-time monitoring aligned with New Zealand Building Code requirements
- wet scrubber to process and clean exhaust emissions, reducing environmental impact
Types of fire testing on offer
Impacts of fire on multi-storey buildings
Assessment of how fire affects multi-story structures, evaluating overall building performance and safety during fire events.
Fire spread
Testing and analysis of fire propagation both within buildings and along exterior façades, including vertical spread scenarios.
Smoke density and gas measurement
Measurement of smoke density and key gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide to assess visibility and toxicity during fires.
Fire resistance and reaction-to-fire testing
Evaluation of materials and assemblies for their resistance to fire and their behavior when exposed to flames, including engineering-based fire assessments where appropriate.
International accreditation and compliance
Our fire lab is fully accredited to conduct testing in accordance with a variety of building codes and standards from around the world. This ensures that our assessments are recognised internationally, giving you confidence in the compliance and quality of your products, systems or research.
