Fire assessments

Fire assessments are engineering-based evaluations in place of testing where there is a minor variation from the tested prototype.

Fire assessments consider the fire performance of a material, product or system that would be expected if it were to be subjected to testing.

These offer cost-effective alternatives to testing - for example, assessing the likely performance of a range of product based on a full test of a representative from the range. Another example application for fire assessments is to consider the performance of specimens for which testing is not possible due to size or configuration.

Fire assessments will normally relate to a specific test standard or to a single Building Code clause. Assessments are based on prototype testing, so clients should discuss the feasibility of an assessment before testing so additional measurements may be taken during the test (for example, additional thermocouples) to assist an understanding of the performance of the specimen.
