Universal design dimensioned diagrams

This section provides a series of dimensioned diagrams showing practical solutions for most areas within and immediately external to a home.

The solutions provided are generic and may have to be adapted to a particular situation. All the diagrams are from the free BRANZ publication Homes without barriers, which was developed in conjunction with many people working in the health and disability fields.

The diagrams are organised into five areas:

  • Outside - site layout, garages, ramps and raised garden beds.
  • Access - entry to the house, moving about indoors, stairs, lifts and doors.
  • Wet areas - bathrooms, kitchens and laundries.
  • Bedrooms - manoeuvrability, storage and access for bed making.
  • Hardware - handrails and door handles.
