Nails

The BRANZ nail listing specifies nails that builders can use in compliance with NZS 3604:2011 Timber-framed buildings. BRANZ has tested these nails to ensure that they meet relevant dimensional, ductility, carbon content and (if galvanised) galvanic coating standards.

About

Nail suppliers can get their nails tested to assure builders they can be used in compliance with NZS 3604:2011 Timber-framed buildings. BRANZ lists nails that meet relevant dimensional, ductility and (if galvanised) galvanic coating standards.

The nail listing scheme is intended for products that do not require the full rigour of a BRANZ Appraisal.

Benefits to nail suppliers

Nails used in timber-framed buildings must have appropriate dimensions and ductility so that they bend when under pressure rather than cracking or breaking.

If nails are galvanised, they need sufficient galvanic coating to meet durability requirements set by NZS 3604:2011 Timber-framed buildings.

A nail listing allows suppliers to advertise that their nails meet these requirements and are shown to be suitable for use as fixings in timber-framed buildings.

Nail testing process

A random sample of nails is taken from a batch supplied by the client.

A subsample of these nails is checked to ensure that the nail dimensions are within the allowable range of AS 2334-1980 Steel nails – Metric series.

A further subsample is subjected to a bend test in accordance with ASTM F1667 Standard specification for driven fasteners: Nails, spikes, and staples. The nails are checked to ensure that there is no evidence of cracking at the bend.

If the nails have a zinc coating, the coating is stripped to determine that the coating has a weight of more than 320 g/m² in accordance with NZS 3604:2011.

Once all the applicable tests are done and the criteria are satisfied, the nails that pass the tests are recorded on the BRANZ nail listing.

BRANZ has tested these nails to assess whether:

  • they meet the dimensional requirements for the specified size in accordance with the relevant standard AS 2334-1980 Steel nails – Metric series
  • they exhibit suitable ductility when tested in accordance with ASTM F1667 Standard specification for driven fasteners: Nails, spikes, and staples
  • they meet the requirements of carbon content in accordance with ASTM F1667 Standard specification for driven fasteners: Nails, spikes and staples
  • if zinc coated, they meet the requirements of 320 g/m² of galvanising in accordance with NZS 3604:2011 Timber-framed buildings.

The nail listing tests a batch of nails for the above acceptance criteria at the time that the number is issued.
