About REBRI
REBRI: Reducing building material waste is an education resource and toolbox to enable action on waste by the construction sector.
REBRI stands for resource efficiency in the building and related industries. Resource efficiency is all about using materials, energy, time and money more effectively.
The 2024 REBRI: Reducing building material waste refresh has been a partnership with the Ministry for the Environment.

We also would like to acknowledge the funding from the Building Research Levy and the collaboration with the Ministry for the Environment for making this happen.

A history of REBRI
REBRI grew from a collaborative effort called Project Construction + Demolition in 1995 as a collaborative effort between the Auckland City Council and BRANZ to undertake research and raise awareness of the issues of waste and the efficient use of resources in construction and demolition (C&D) projects.
A consortium of councils, BRANZ, RONZ and the Ministry for the Environment, with assistance from Winstone Wallboards and industry representatives, extended the initiative in 2003 to undertake more research and develop national waste reduction guidelines.
Site sponsors were:
- Auckland City Council
- BRANZ
- Christchurch City Council
- Environment Waikato
- Hamilton City Council
- Manukau City Council
- North Shore City Council
- Recycling Operators of New Zealand
- Rodney District Council
- Waitakere City Council
- Winstone Wallboards
In 2003, the National Construction and Demolition Waste Reduction Project was set up to extend this initiative even further, with the aim of developing tools and helping industry, councils and the community to reduce C&D waste at landfills and clean fills. The resources resulting from this project were developed through close consultation with industry representatives.
In 2009, REBRI was extensively reworked for the use of the building industry and relocated on the BRANZ website with updated information and links, the REBRI resource routing calculator and streamlining of some of the downloadable forms.
In 2014, the REBRI website was refreshed.
In 2020, the REBRI website was again refreshed along with the BRANZ website.
