SR487 Improving design management (2024)

Product Description

This study report highlights independent design managers (IDMs) in the New Zealand construction industry. Unlike other construction disciplines, no minimum qualifications or professional memberships for IDM professionals exist in New Zealand. Consequently, IDMs may fulfil their role without necessarily having educational or professional competency in any design discipline. Anecdotal reports indicate variable design competency and that construction procurement practices may undermine design outcomes. IDMs may have problems ensuring the design team achieves client design objectives. This study details how industry stakeholders perceive this issue and consequently whether there is a need to establish a best-practice guide and new qualifications for IDMs.
