ER113 Updating the Building Code: Changing requirements for accessibility to commercial buildings: Sanitary facilities (2025)
Product Description
Accessibility of basic sanitary amenities, like toilets, is the focus of the Accessibility to commercial buildings’ sanitary facilities research project. Building on earlier research, the work looks at people’s expectations for adequate and convenient sanitary facilities in public and commercial buildings. Researchers and collaborators workshopped, surveyed, and requested feedback to create and agreed on a roadmap for change.
Led by WSP, with support from MBIE, the project aims to inform revisions to the Building Code to make public toilets more accessible and inclusive. Partners included design specialists, government departments, councils and community organisations.
The findings will contribute to the liveability of cities and public spaces.
