Comparing 2015 survey and 2010 survey findings

The 2010 and 2015 House Condition Surveys used the same sampling method, which included nationwide coverage and owned and rented houses. A comparison of findings shows some positive change in our housing stock but also highlights there is still significant scope for improvement..

Overall assessment of level of maintenance

Using the assessment of how well maintained properties were overall in 2010 and 2015 shows house maintenance may be improving across the whole housing stock. However, rentals remain in a poorer state of repair on average than owner-occupied houses.

Insulation, heating and ventilation

More houses in 2015 met EECA-recommended insulation levels of at least 120 mm insulation in the roof space - 37% compared with 13% in 2010.

More houses had fixed heating sources, heat pumps in particular. The proportion of houses with heat pumps increased from 26% in 2010 to 39% in 2015.

Fewer houses had visible mould in 2015 - 49% compared with 59% in 2010. In 2015, more houses had mechanical ventilation which helps to remove moisture in bathrooms.
