Roadmap themes and objectives

The fire research roadmap has several themes and objectives.

Research theme RT1 - Building users

Objective statement

To improve knowledge of how ‘building-user' interactions affect the societal impact of fire.

Subthemes ST1

  • ST1.1 - Health and social impact
  • ST1.2 - Human behaviour in fire
  • ST1.3 - Vulnerable populations
  • ST1.4 - Fire brigade intervention

Research theme RT2 - Sustainability

Objective statement

To improve knowledge of the influence of building sustainability objectives (e.g. building carbon footprint, energy use efficiencies and waste) on the societal impact of fire.

Subthemes ST2

  • ST2.1 - Environmental impact
  • ST2.2 - Economic impact
  • ST2.3 - Interaction between sustainability and fire

Research theme RT3 - Risk and uncertainty

Objective statement

To improve knowledge of how the development and application of risk concepts can reduce the societal impact of fire.

Subthemes ST3

  • ST3.1 - Quantitative risk analysis
  • ST3.2 - Reliability of fire safety systems
  • ST3.3 - Risk-informed acceptance criteria

Research theme RT4 - Building resilience

Objective statement

To improve knowledge of how ‘structural system-building material-fire' interactions affect the societal impact of fire.

Subthemes ST4

  • ST4.1 - Structural fire performance
  • ST4.2 - Post-earthquake performance of buildings in fire
  • ST4.3 - Fire properties of materials

Research theme RT5 - Building typologies

Objective statement

To improve knowledge of unique aspects of specific building types and interfaces that influence the societal impact of fire.

Subthemes ST5

  • ST5.1 - Tall buildings
  • ST5.2 - Medium-rise residential buildings
  • ST5.3 - Household units
  • ST5.4 - Upgrading existing buildings
  • ST5.5 - Wildland-urban-interface (WUI)
  • ST5.6 - Complex building structures

Research theme RT6 - Component and system performance

Objective statement

To improve knowledge of how individual building components and combinations of components as systems affect the societal impact of fire.

Subthemes ST6

  • ST6.1 - External vertical fire spread
  • ST6.2 - Reaction-to-fire behaviour
  • ST6.3 - Compartment fire dynamics

Research theme RT7 - Technology

Objective statement

To improve knowledge of how ‘big data' and associated technology can be used to reduce the societal impact of fire.

Subthemes ST7

  • ST7.1 - Fire engineering tools and methods
  • ST7.2 - Collection and analysis of data

Research theme RT8 - Sector performance

Objective statement

To increase knowledge of how building industry performance influences the societal impact of fire.

Subthemes ST8

  • ST8.1 - Sector capability and competence
  • ST8.2 - Education and training
  • ST8.3 - Process
