Telephone survey results

The results of the telephone survey revealed important points about non-residential buildings that needed to be taken into account for the BEES project.

Findings included:

  • the wide diversity of the businesses situated in the BEES buildings, shown by the type of business and its activities, the times of operation and the number of staff and clients
  • the heavy reliance of these businesses on reticulated electricity
  • variations in energy and water prices for businesses
  • variations in lease arrangements and exposure to landlords and property managers
  • the sizeable proportion - although in the minority - of owner-occupier businesses
  • the range and mix of appliances and equipment in these buildings.

A range of analysis on the businesses and their premises is available in the BEES study reports, including:

  • business sector categories
  • occupations represented in 261 participant businesses
  • building characteristics
  • tenure status
  • lease arrangements of tenants
  • length of occupation
  • building management arrangements
  • usage for typical weekdays and typical weekends
  • clients visiting premises on a typical day
  • energy types used
  • energy and water purchase
  • equipment and appliances.
