About this tool

The H1 Schedule method tool helps designers and building professionals check whether a house or small building complies with the schedule method of Building Code clause H1 (Energy efficiency).

It is an Excel‑based tool that applies the requirements of H1/AS1 5th edition, Amendment 1. This compliance pathway can be used up until 26 November 2026. After that date, the schedule method will no longer be available, and the calculation method will be required instead.

The tool is suitable for:

  • Houses and other residential buildings
  • Non‑residential buildings under 300 m²
  • Buildings without curtain walling

How to use this tool

To use the H1 Schedule method tool:

  1. Download and open the Excel file
  2. Read the instructions carefully before entering data
  3. Select the correct climate zone
  4. Enter building areas accurately into the blue‑shaded cells only
  5. Use drop‑down menus where provided
  6. Review the automatically calculated results (shown in orange)

When using the tool, keep in mind:

  • Window area must be 30% or less of total wall area
  • Construction R‑values (not insulation R‑values) must be used
  • Designers are responsible for confirming R‑values using approved methods, such as the BRANZ House insulation guide or the relevant NZ standards.

The tool produces a clear compliance outcome based on the information entered.

Background

The schedule method is one of several compliance pathways provided in H1/AS1 (5th edition, Amendment 1). It offers a simplified approach for smaller buildings by setting minimum performance requirements for building elements such as floors, walls, roofs, windows, doors, and skylights.

However, the schedule method has been removed from H1/AS1 6th edition and is only available as a transitional option until 26 November 2026. After this date, projects will need to use the calculation method or modelling method to demonstrate H1 compliance.

The tool reflects BRANZ’s interpretation of H1/AS1 and relies on accurate input from designers. It must be used in its complete, unmodified form, and BRANZ does not accept liability for errors resulting from incorrect data entry.
