This report explains and discusses aspects of building design for ensuring the safe escape of occupants from the effects of fire and smoke in multi-storey buildings.

Traditional practices and assumptions are discussed as well as the implications of more recent research and the possible effects on existing and future provisions for means of escape in New Zealand codes.

Although the report is directed towards multi-storey buildings, there are many aspects that also apply to low-rise construction.
