How it works
Artisan allows tradespeople to:
- photograph key compliance elements of a build using their smartphone
- upload images as work progresses, directly from site
Inspectors can then:
- review images in real time
- approve work or request changes remotely
- carry out inspections without needing to travel to site
For BCAs, Artisan enables:
- easier scheduling and management of inspection activity
- reduced travel and waiting times
- more flexible and productive use of inspector time
This approach benefits everyone involved including inspectors, builders and homeowners by cutting delays, improving visibility and supporting better collaboration.
Real‑world impact
Artisan has been widely adopted by major industry players, representing around 45% of all new residential building consents in Aotearoa New Zealand. Users include Auckland Council, Kāinga Ora and Marlborough District Council.
At Marlborough District Council, where inspectors cover large rural and remote areas, Artisan has delivered clear results:
- Over 9,500 km of travel saved
- Inspection times reduced by an average of 1.1 hours per inspection
- Reduced workload pressures and improved flexibility for inspectors
Users report improved collaboration, better-quality records and greater confidence that inspection documentation will stand up to future scrutiny.
Background
Artisan was developed by BRANZ as part of its wider strategy to transform the building system and support the efficient delivery of quality housing across Aotearoa New Zealand.
