New Zealand construction industry targeted suicide prevention

Earlier research commissioned by MATES to understand suicide by those working in construction industry revealed a discrepancy in the number of deaths by suicide than previously reported. Initial analyses of the data from several sources has suggested that previously reported suicide numbers are a considerable under count of the true prevalence of suicide in the New Zealand construction industry, for a number of complex data quality and data access reasons.

About this programme

Earlier research commissioned by MATES to understand suicide by those working in construction industry revealed a discrepancy in the number of deaths by suicide than previously reported. Initial analyses of the data from several sources has suggested that previously reported suicide numbers are a considerable under count of the true prevalence of suicide in the New Zealand construction industry, for a number of complex data quality and data access reasons. The proposed study aims to clarify the true prevalence of suicide in the construction industry, and calculate the industry specific suicide rate, and examine demographic and factors within the industry that many contribute to or explain its higher suicide rate compared with other industries. This is essential to inform targeted suicide prevention efforts by the industry and provide baseline and trend data for measuring the effectiveness of these interventions
