Description
The Sustainable Steel Council (SSC) built a roadmap to net-zero carbon for the New Zealand steel industry. The roadmap included the entire steel value chain from ‘Cradle to Cradle’, including manufacture, decommissioning, and recycling, and covers both primary bulk steel and steel products, with a construction focus. The roadmap was developed through engagement with SSC members including the following groups: Roll formed, Structural, Light framing, Reinforcing, Semi-finished, Manufacture, Import, Export (recyclers) and Stainless steel. It was also informed by international work, such as Making Net Zero Steel Possible by the Mission Possible Partnership. New technologies and their potential impact decade-by-decade were assessed for their potential to support steel decarbonisation. The roadmap considered the potential for improvement throughout the whole value chain, considering both supply and demand.
