What is an Environmental Product Declaration?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) – also known as a Type III environmental declaration in ISO terminology – is a concise, readable, third-party verified document. It reports the results of a quantitative technique called life cycle assessment (LCA), along with other relevant environmental information.
EPD Australasia was established in 2014 as a trans-Tasman EPD programme operator. The programme is a regional partner with The International EPD® System, one of the largest and oldest EPD scheme providers globally.
Why choose an EPD?
Credible environmental performance
Showcase your products and services in a credible, science-based manner.
Bring transparency
Transparency builds trust with your clients and partners and also helps them make informed, sustainable choices.
Open doors to sustainable initiatives
Enhance your product’s reputation and open doors to new markets where sustainability is valued.
Make your product stand out
Make it easier for customers to compare products and for your business to stand out with credible environmental credentials.
Bring preference of your product for projects aiming for high sustainability standards, for example, those striving for an environmental rating such as Green Star in New Zealand.
Standards and rules
EPDs must meet international standards
All EPDs are developed following strict principles and procedures set out in ISO 14025:2006 Environmental labels and declarations – Type III environmental declarations – Principles and procedures. This ensures credibility and consistency.
Applies to all construction products and services
The key requirements are outlined in EN 15804:2012+A2:2019 Sustainability of construction works – Environmental product declarations – Core rules for the product category of construction products, along with the relevant product category rules (PCRs). These define how to measure and report environmental impacts for your industry.
