What we do
BRANZ turns independent building science into practical tools, testing and guidance the sector can trust. This work supports the sector to create more affordable, resilient, sustainable and higher-quality buildings for all New Zealanders.
We do this in these fundamental ways -
Our history
BRANZ exists because the building and construction sector chose to invest in shared, independent capability to solve problems no single organisation could tackle alone. Our foundations date back to the late 1950s, when the industry established the Building Research Bureau to address critical gaps in building knowledge.
This collective commitment was formalised in 1969 through the Building Research Levy Act, establishing BRANZ as an independent research and testing organisation. Legislative responsibility sits with the Minister for Building and Construction and is administered by MBIE.
Today, we continue to invest on behalf of the sector, focusing where it makes the biggest difference—improving affordability, quality, resilience and sustainability across New Zealand’s built environment.
Six decades of impact
BRANZ has made a tangible impact by helping the building and construction sector build better. We've turned independent science into practical tools, trusted testing services and guidance that improve building performance in the real world. Here are some of the ways we have made a difference.
Annual review & reporting
We report publicly each year on how we use levy funding and the difference our research, testing and infrastructure make to New Zealand’s building sector. The Annual Review is presented to Parliament and provides a transparent account of our work.
