BU576 Edge insulation of concrete floor slabs
Approximately 80% of the heat lost through a concrete slab on ground occurs through the edge. Insulating the edge of the slab is likely to be required where a floor is heated with embedded reticulated hot water or electric cabling and is recommended for any on-ground concrete floor slab.
This bulletin outlines the current options and the design challenges when providing edge insulation to concrete slabs. It updates and replaces Bulletin 552.
The bulletin covers:
- Building Code requirements
- edge insulation options
- exterior insulation
- thermal break method
- secondary slab method
- international practice
