BU481 Timber windows

If correctly installed and maintained, timber windows can still be operating after 80-100 years. This bulletin describes timber window design requirements, with particular reference to the use of E2/AS1 as a benchmark for the degree of acceptability of a particular detail with the appropriate cladding.

The bulletin covers:

• window design including window styles, classifications, materials, construction, joints, glues, durability and treatment of timber, finishes and glazing
• specifying windows
• installation of glazing, including glass types, rebates, glazing sealants, glazing putty, plastic putty and bead glazing
• maintenance and repairs, including water leakage and repainting.
