BU576 Edge insulation of concrete floor slabs

BU576.jpgApproximately 80% of the heat lost through a concrete slab on ground occurs through the edge. Insulating the edge of the slab is likely to be required where a floor is heated with embedded reticulated hot water or electric cabling and is recommended for any on-ground concrete floor slab.

This bulletin outlines the current options and the design challenges when providing edge insulation to concrete slabs.

The bulletin covers:

  • Building Code requirements
  • edge insulation options
  • exterior insulation
  • thermal break method
  • secondary slab method
  • international practice
  • maintenance.
