BU506 Laying solid timber strip flooring on concrete slabs

BU506.jpgSolid timber strip floors are a popular floor finish in both domestic and commercial buildings. Traditionally, these were installed on a suspended timber floor, but today it is common to specify a timber strip floor laid directly onto a concrete slab.

Problems can occur if the concrete is not dry enough when the floor is laid or the moisture content of the flooring material itself is incorrect.

This bulletin covers:

  • concrete floor slab moisture, including drying times and measuring moisture content
  • selection of solid timber strip flooring, including species, machining and moisture content
  • installation, including direct adhesion, using an intermediate layer and using timber framing
  • laying
  • finishing.
