BU337 Protecting window glass from surface damage

BU337.jpgA common misconception is that glass is everlasting and is stain or corrosion proof.

Surface damage (scratches) to glass from poor installation and cleaning practices is also a common problem, particularly during construction.

Apart from repairing breakages, little thought or attention is given to ensuring glass is maintained in good condition, particularly during building design and construction.

This bulletin looks at:

  • why glass can corrode and stain
  • causes of mechanical damage to the glass surface
  • designing to protect glass from damage
  • preventing damage during construction (in storage and once installed)
  • cleaning frequency and methods.
