Whole building whole of life framework

Welcome to the New Zealand whole building whole of life framework (‘framework').

The purpose of the framework is to provide information and resources to facilitate more consistent calculation of potential environmental impacts of New Zealand buildings across the building life cycle using a technique called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The focus of initial work has been on early design of new-build offices.

The framework is based on international building sustainability standards, with available resources structured as illustrated below.

LCA is new to those involved in design and their clients, its value and benefits uncertain and untested. Press this button to access a free Excel-based design support tool that calculates environmental impacts of concept and preliminary designs of offices using the framework resources.

Press this button to find out who the framework is for. Also select to access the BRANZ SR349 study report which provides an overview of the framework, and the BRANZ SR351 study report which provides information about how supporting datasheets (see Data ) have been developed.

The purpose of the reference buildings is to provide a comparator for office buildings going through concept and preliminary design. Press this button for further information and to access the SR350 study report, which summarises how the reference buildings were developed and assesses their environmental impacts.

Press this button to access supporting data and information in datasheets that can be used for building LCA. All datasheets are in Excel format. Also select to access a New Zealand low voltage Grid electricity dataset, particularly for use when modelling electricity use in buildings.

 Indicators.png

Press this button to access the BRANZ SR293 study report which sets out recommended current and future environmental indicators to calculate when undertaking building LCA. The report also includes details of underlying methods that should be used for their calculation.

You can also provide feedback, information and data which can feed into future updates of the framework. To find out how to do this, please click here
