BRANZ 4-Step Process Environmental Product Declaration
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) provide construction and other manufacturers with formal environmental assessment and verification of their products and services. EPDs are developed based on international standards, using a quantitative technique called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
With the establishment and launch of the Australasian EPD Programme in 2014, manufacturers now have access to an EPD Programme Operator offering a new, robust, science-based communication method for demonstrating the environmental credentials of their products and services. EPDs are increasingly gaining recognition in building environmental rating schemes globally, including most recently Green Star in Australia.
The BRANZ 4-Step Process is designed to help you develop and register an EPD on the Australasian EPD Programme.
Why develop an Australasian EPD Programme EPD?
Manufacturers have different reasons for developing EPDs. They provide a benchmark of a product's environmental impacts that can be used as a basis for continuous improvement. They are communication documents based on a rigorous quantitative assessment to specific rules (called Product Catagory Rules or PCRs) and verified by an independent third party. By developing an EPD using the BRANZ 4-Step Process, you may identify opportunities such as increased efficiencies, less waste and cost savings. Above all, EPDs demonstrate product integrity through transparency of reporting.
